European Summer University for Arthouse cinema professionals

Venice, San Servolo Island, 27th August – 2nd September 2012

The 9th European Summer University for Arthouse cinema professionals, organized within the framework of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, will take place on the campus-island of San Servolo during the Venice International Film Festival.

Arthouse cinema screens extended all over Europe in the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. They now account for 4000 of the 30000 cinema screens on the continent. Their position is very different depending on the European regions: organized networks in some countries but mostly isolated cinemas elsewhere.

Still, in all countries there is a need to both prepare the future generation of art cinema managers, and help current managers to face the new challenges of their profession.

 The aim of the “Art Cinema = Action + Management” training is:

  • to hand on the specific know-how (methods, tools, ideas, contacts) for programming, enlivening and managing an art cinema to a new generation of managers.
  • to give present managers a place to discuss the challenges independent exhibitors have to face in the age of new business models.
  • to make useful recommendations and give advice for the whole profession on how to strengthen the competitiveness of independent exhibition.

The training is divided into two categories:  Juniors and Executives. 55 participants will take part in lectures, listen to case studies, and hold debates and discussions on Arthouse cinema exhibition.  They will share their experiences with 30 international professional trainers: Alberto Barbera, the director of the Venice Film Festival; the Icelandic director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson; Emmanuel Joly from the MEDIA Program of the European Commission; the German producer Alfred Hürmer; Laurent Creton, the economist of cinema and a professor at the Sorbonne University; the General Director of the Mexican Cineteca Nacional, Paula Astorga; the deputy director of the Sofia International Film festival, Mira Staleva; Romanian director and distributor Tudor Giurgiu; the director of Venice Film Market Pascal Diot; the Director of the Independent cinema Office, Catharine des Forges; and Jiri Sebesta from the Czech distribution Company Aerofilms to name but a few.

26 countries will be represented on the island: Belorussia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Emirates, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and United Kingdom.

A CICAE Jury will participate at the Venice Film festival, and will choose a film which will be awarded with the Art cinema Award. The members are: Tanja Miličić, Festival Producer at Pula Film Festival and manager of Cinema Valli in Pula (Croatia), Francesco Clerici, responsible for the educational projects of Barz and Hippo, writer, documentary director, video maker and Jon Barrenechea General Manager of The Duke of York’s Picturehouse in Brighton, he is also the author of the blog/podcast Splendor Cinema.

The International Confederation of Art Cinemas for the development of Art Cinema worldwide Aims & Actions >> to support the diversity of the cinematographic offer and strengthen theatrical exploitation of art films by:

  • defending cultural diversity and giving the people access to a variety of independent films and cinemas that offer variety in their programming – including masterpieces of film history and a special offer for the Young Public;
  • offering exhibitors who share the same aims a space for sharing information and experiences;
  • fostering collaboration between exhibitors, and enabling the creation of regional and national market-influencing groups capable of obtaining support for Arthouse cinemas from government bodies and local institutions.
  • promoting the screening of art films from festivals in art cinemas by improving their circulation and increasing their audiences (a dozen film are granted the ‘’Art Cinema Award’’ every year)
  • organising training for cinema professionals (about 500 professionals have trained since 2004 in Berlin, Cartage, Dakar, Mexico City, Paris, Toulouse, Valdivia and Venice)
