Synopsis

Salma, Laila and Nur will never fit in. Palestinians with Israeli citizenship, they choose to live a life of freedom in Tel Aviv, away from their home villages. Each is looking for love, but as young Palestinian women they learn that a relationship of their choosing is not easy to fulfill. They have to choose their place, either in the city or in the village.

Jurys Begründung:

Courageous , current, fresh, intelligent, rebellious and nonconformist.

Bar Bahar / In between, the debut film of Maysaloun Hamoud, director with a degree in Middle Eastern History at the University of Jerusalem, is a film that stands out for its courage and strength in adversity, for its rhythm and truth in every scene, every glance and every silence. It addresses a complicated subject as it is current: the coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis, coexistence between modernity and tradition; culture and freedom; and does it, always, stripped of any taboo.

Bar Bahar / In Between portrays the reality of three different women but with one common denominator: their willingness to find love and live life, and their determination to do it freely, openly and with great self-esteem. They are able to live together, each with their ideas, in the same house, in the same city, in the same country.

Salma, Nur and Laila are three Palestinians with Israeli passport who decide to take refuge in the freedom offered by a cosmopolitan and carefree city like Tel Aviv and thus to break the chains that bind them to tradition and confusion.

The film passes by the strictly political and religious side and prefers to focus on day-to-day problems and the price of freedom and coexistence, and it does this through details and understanding.

Can tradition win the battle to happiness?

Do we all have the right to choose our future?

Maysaloun Hamoud has directed a film focused on the problems of women and their lack of freedom and has done it so boldly and clearly, decisively and with great passion. Therefore, we believe her to be more than worthy of the CICAE prize in Zinemaldia 2016.
