CANNES 2014: GREAT PARTICIPATION AT THE CICAE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND DEBATE
The General Assembly of the International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) took place during the 67th edition of the Cannes Film Festival at the Grand Hotel of Cannes.
The Assembly was led by the President of the CICAE, Dr. Detlef Rossmann who was again elected to preside over the Confederation. The President of the German association of Art Cinemas AG Kino – Gilde e.V., Dr. Christian Bräuer, was elected Vice-President of the CICAE together with Domenico Dinoia (President of FICE, Italy) and Alain Bouffartigue (President of AFCAE, France).
The CICAE General Assembly was followed by a debate about “Cinema, Culture and the Internet”, which was moderated by Prof. Laurent Creton from the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisual Research of the Sorbonne University in Paris. During the debate the CICAE representatives emphasised on the important role of the internet as a means of communication and as a service from the cinemas to their audience. The current debate on day-and-date-releases and the cuts to film windows was received with reservation.
On the other hand, the exhibitors and the festival managers of the CICAE underlined the undeniable role of cinema as a cultural and social space and agreed that VoD will not replace this social function. The diverse cultural offer of art cinemas and festivals, as well as their intermediary role with the audience guarantees the effective circulation of European film. The new internet-based forms of exploitation can only be conceived and tested in close cooperation with festivals, cinemas and their associations. The results of the simultaneous release of small European films presented in Cannes by the European Commission did not show any convincing business model so far.
The General Assembly of the CICAE came to a close with the annual lunch at the Grand Hotel with the participation of Mr. Xavier Troussard, Head of Unit of the Europe Creative Program.
