New General Delegate appointed at CICAE

Press Release

Berlin, 14/09/2018

The International Confederation of Art House Cinemas (CICAE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Boglárka Nagy as the new General Delegate of the association.

Boglárka joins the CICAE team after having spent 9 years at the French Institute in Romania: the last 5 years as programmer and film projects manager of Elvire Popesco Cinema in Bucharest, which received the Europa Cinemas Best Programming Award in 2017.
With a work experience complemented by film selection for local film festivals, educational projects coordination and 11 years in publishing as a film critic and film journalist, she hopes to reinforce and further develop CICAE, an international organization that supports art house cinemas and the presence of quality films in cinemas around the world.

In the context of a film industry increasingly looking to digitise screening formats, viewing environments, as well as the automatized, algorithm-based offers of online platforms, the presence of art house cinemas is crucial. Maintaining the statutory windows and thereby starting the exhibition of films on the big screen, as well as the respect of copyright ensures film makers and artists the best possible visibility for their work and an occasion to meet their audience in real life. It is important to recognize the value of art house cinemas, as they are more than just a mere component of an industry which produces products that need to be placed afterwards; they are bastions of culture that create an opportunity for personal development, cultural enrichment and community building, they invite people to stay in touch with other fellow humans and the world.

It is paramount that the International Confederation of Art House Cinemas consolidates its relations with its key partners – Europa Cinemas and the International Union of Cinemas – , as well as with its members by creating an exchange framework during its annual training in Venice, by organizing meetings on the occasion of film festivals and collaborative projects such as the European Art Cinema Day, that allow a better knowledge of individual and collective challenges of cinemas and their audiences. This is the basis of a valid representation and the premise of accomplishing the objectives of CICAE: encouraging arthouse cinemas to come together under a common umbrella, obtaining support for arthouse films from government bodies, fostering the distribution of high quality films from all countries, in all countries and the promotion of screening of art films in order toto increase audiences and foster production through targeted cultural initiatives.
