The European Arthouse Cinema Day 2021: a successful 6th edition!

The 6th edition of the European Arthouse Cinema Day took place on Sunday, the 14th of November 2021 reuniting approximately 60.000 spectators in 650 cinemas across 38 countries. Previews and premieres, guests, special young programmes, talks and other accompanying activities enriched the programmes of the participating cinemas.

These are very positive results as the day was celebrated at the beginning of a new Covid-19 wave in Europe, with some restrictions in countries like Bulgaria, Latvia or Austria and the consequent decrease of spectators in the movie theatres.

The participating countries have been: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States of America.

The ambassadors of this day have been Ildikó Enyedi, Mathieu Amalric, Jonás Trueba and Valeria Golino, who with video-messages and direct participation in some of the events organised in France, Spain and Italy, have been the spokespersons for the day and the clear message that cinema is alive and a fundamental part of the community.

Ildikó Enyedi‘s most recent film, THE STORY OF MY WIFE was showing on the occasion in several cinemas across Poland, Hungary, France and Germany. Since Ildikó Enyedi could not be present on a cinema on the day itself, we shot two interviews about her relation to cinema and about the making of the film itself and created exclusive materials to accompany those screenings.

Valeria Golino, another of our ambassadors, went to the cinema on the very same day at Cinema Filangieri, in Napoli, where she is currently shooting a film. She welcomed the guests and celebrated the cinema experience watching IL BAMBINO NASCOSTO by Roberto Andò, the closing film of the last Venice Film Festival.

In Spain, our ambassador Jonás Trueba participated from Madrid in a shared livestreamed Q&A and screening of QUIÉN LO IMPIDE, which was shown in more Spanish cinemas.

At Cinema Paris in Berlin it was organised an exclusive screening event of SERRE MOI FORT, Mathieu Amalric’s latest film, preceded by a special greeting by Amalric and followed up by a Q&A with the producer of the film, Felix von Böhm.

Also in Berlin, the EACD was the starting day of the Month of European Film, pilot project of our partner European Film Academy, a month full of screenings of European films in Berlin, the city of this year’s European Film Awards. The screenings were taking place all over the 14 Yorck cinemas in Berlin, from the latest releases to European horror
and genre films and even a special strand of LGBTQ films dedicated to films from Europe. The Month of European film was running from Sunday 14 November to Sunday 12 December, closing up with the European Film Awards.

Agnès Patron, who created the 2021 EACD poster, was at Cinéma “L’Entrepôt” in Paris, where she showed her short films and gave a masterclass.

In Paris, our ambassador from 2018, Laurent Cantet, participated in a special screening of his latest film ARTHUR RAMBO at the Cinéma Le Louxor. The Q&A was live streamed in several cinemas in France.

In Germany and Austria exhibitors showcased Pedro Almodovar‘s THE HUMAN VOICE followed by a Q&A with the director and Tilda Swinton.

In Seoul, the Cube Cinema, participating for the second time, showed in preview FRANCE by Bruno Dumont, PETIT MAMAN by Céline Sciamma and THE VIRGEN AUGUST by Jonás Trueba, and offered wine to its visitors.

In Hungary, Art Mozi Egyesület, the national arthouse cinema association organised a common programme for its members, which participated with 25 venues in total and had more admissions than 2019 (1530 towards 1600 in 2021).

First time participating, Alvalade Cineclube in Portugal, organised a full day to celebrate arthouse cinema: in the morning, special screening for kids/families with the short animation winners of the Annecy Film Festival 2021; in the afternoon/night a double bill with a music concert by Mariana Camacho and a screening curated by her, LE MERAVIGLIE by Alice Rohrwacher (EACD ambassador of 2018).

The list of participating cinemas and countries is to be found on: artcinemaday.org.
