Athens, 2004 summer Olympic Games. 11-year-old Misha arrives from Russia to live with his mother, Sofia. What he doesn’t know is that there is a father waiting for him there. While Greece is living the Olympic dream, Misha will get violently catapulted into the adult world, riding on the dark side of his favourite fairy tales.
In SON OF SOFIA we follow a 11-year-old Misha moving in with his mother after two years of separation. He is thrown into a completely new home and environment in Athens. Caught between two cultures, desperately urging for his mother’s love and attention, Misha escapes into an animal fantasy world.
Director Elina Psykou seamlessly stitches worlds of reality and fantasy into a coming-of-age drama for all generations. Close attention to detail, effective music score that makes you feel the protagonists longing for times passed, emerges you into many layers of emotions swirling in the multicultural, newly formed family.
