CICAE Art Cinema Award at 65th Berlinale
We have the pleasure to announce the winners of the CICAE Art Cinema Award at the 65th Berlinale.
The Jury members Marie Vassort from the Cinema “Le Central”, Colomiers (France), Lina Winkler from Kino Breitwand, Gilching (Germany) and Jacopo Chessa, director of the Italian association A.I.A.C.E. decided to award the Brazilian film Que Horas Ela Volta? (The Second Mother) by Anna Muylaert.
The jury is happy to announce its unanimous decision to award the CICAE Art Cinema Award in the Panorama Section of the Berlin International Film Festival to Brazilian filmmaker Anna Muylaert for her film Que Horas Ela Volta? With loving view, the director accompanies her main characters’ life with gentle tones and subtle humor covering heavy conflicts and social issues of modern Brazil. It’s a story about two women, of two different generations shown by an outstanding performance of two actresses: Regina Casé and Camila Márdila. Muylaert easily overcomes the distance between audience and screen simply throughout their huge empathy for the struggle between work and worries about their family.

The Jury members Peggy Johnson from The Loft Cinema in Tucson (USA), Sylvie Buscail from Ciné 32, Auch (France) and Małgorzata Kuzdra from Kino MUZA, Poznan (Poland) decided to award the Dutch film Zurich by Sacha Polak.
This film is the portrait of a woman in grief but the bold writing makes the story new. Director Sacha Polak manages to examine the commonplace and breathe a real emotional impact into the path of a young woman. Her sad story is told in an unexpected way, in reverse, and the film dares to use the language of cinema, making it more about what we see and less about what is said.
We discover in this film a wonderful new actress, Wende Snijders, who is a singer and performance artist making her film debut. Her willingness to take on the raw emotional material in a natural, honest way is at the core of the success of the film.
