Italian film festival of Annecy (France): “Nina” by ELISA FUKSAS winner of CICAE’s trophy!
The contemporary architecture of Rome is at the heart of the beautifully shot and winsomely appealing Nina, which charts the oddball escapades of a young woman in a depopulated Rome during one hot summer. This heartwarming tale of a lonesome girl who teaches singing and dog-sits during her holidays on the outskirts of Rome. The striking cinematography evokes Nina’s indefinable anxiety. By opening herself up to life she conquers a vision of her future full of imagination and beauty. As the protagonist glides through Rome’s suburbs, the depopulated scenery is refreshing and unique like a fantasy world.
Motivation of CICAE’s jury :
We have chosen this film as the CICAE prize winner because it is a light-hearted, feel-good movie that can touch any kind of audience with its strange, sweet humour. It explores at the same time many different, serious themes such as loneliness, indecision, and miscommunication. The attention that the director has paid to the architecture is unexpectedly impressive: the Rome framed in the film is totally different from the clichés with which we are familiar, because the city is pictured as a modern architectural space. The stable, symmetrical shots of the city let the audience enter the special, fantasy-like universe of the film’s protagonist. The connection between the film and its audience is also enforced by the unusually chosen classical music. Nina is a simple story about simple people leading unique lives in their own way, just as everyone in the real life. Each person has his own lifestyle, interests, little joys and seemingly big problems. This fact also contributes to the film’s appeal with the audience.
