“No” by Pablo Larraín wins Art Cinema Award at the Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes
Synopsis: When Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, facing international pressure, calls for a referendum on his presidency in 1988, opposition leaders persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra, to spearhead their campaign. With scant resources and constant scrutiny by the despot’s watchmen, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and free their country from oppression.
This is a film where politics and entertainment are not a contradiction in terms. It shows that a serious subject can be treated intelligently, even leaving space for humor. At the same time, the director honors the world of media, which played such an important role in changing history.
