“WADJDA” de HAIFAA AL MANSOUR wins ART CINEMA AWARD in Venice
CICAE is glad to announce that the ART CINEMA AWARD at THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL 2012 has been given to WADJDA (Saudi Arabia, 2012, 97 min) by HAIFAA AL MANSOUR.
Synopsis: A story set in Saudi Arabia and focused on the experiences of a young girl who challenges her country’s traditions.
The statement of the jury: WADJDA is a welcome original debut from a country with almost no cinematic output, which makes this film and its story even more daring and courageous. It provides insight into a rarely seen world, the female realm in countries with strict adherence of Sharia Law. Although this backdrop is culturally and socially interesting, it is at its core, a simple and well told story.
Expertly shot and beautifully played by its young cast, this is a surprising and strong entry from Saudi Arabia onto the cinema world stage.
