“The Art Cinema Award goes to AUSÊNCIA by Chico Teixeira for its outstanding combination of artistic quality and accessibility for the audience. AUSÊNCIA tells the story of 14-year-old Serginho, who grows up in São Paulo in adverse circumstances, taking care of his alcoholic mother and his little brother. Chico Teixeira created a very human main character, which remains strong in spite of all that is missing in his life. The pace is calm, but Matheus Fagundes’ performance engages throughout. The director proves a sympathetic observer of details, gestures and glances through which the relationships are portrayed. We were also impressed by the camerawork. Serginho’s story evolves in two flats, a market and a circus – simple spaces that were captured in beautiful images”.
A daily, family, social, sexual and emotional drama with a plot centered on the figure of Serginho, a boy of 14. The audience follows day after day this young boy, who is «no more child not yet man», in its recently acquired new role as man of the house, in his work on the market, in his friendship with Mudinho and Silvinha and in his confused relationship with the professor. The film is a juxtaposition of moments in the life of a child in transition (Cine en Construcción).
