The International Art Cinemas Confederation is glad to inform you that BABY BLUES by KASIA ROSLANIEC won the CICAE ART CINEMA AWARD at the 29TH FESTROIA Setúbal, Portugal (7 – 16 June 2013, www.festroia.pt)

Synopsis of BABY BLUES:

Natalia really wanted to have a baby. Now she’s got one and this extrovert seventeen-year-old’s life has suddenly become one big struggle. Feeling rejected by her still youthful mother, she clings desperately to her child, although she hasn’t really got the hang of things yet or developed a genuine bond. Her carefree skateboarding friend Kuba tries his best to get used to the idea of being a father but winds up using her tiny apartment as a venue for parties with the rest of his pot-smoking crew. Natalia fritters what little money she has managed to borrow on flamboyant outfits. Hoping to secure a job as a sales assistant in a stylish clothing store, she allows herself to fall for the charms of the shop’s young manager – who is only too willing to exploit his position. Natalia’s world is beginning to spin out of control.

Motivation of the CICAE jury :

„BABY BLUES is a colourful and stereotype-free story of adolescents being parents already told in an energetic and modern manner combining a hypnotic cinematic view with remarkable acting of teenagers. Kasia Roslaniec` work revealing complex issues without moralizing and offering a new cinema style has the potential to attract young and old spectators in art house cinemas.“

The CICAE jury at the FESTROIA was composed of Gertraud Eiter, Otto Preminger-Institut (Leokino / Cinematograph, Austria), Odeta Karoblyte, Vilnius International Film Festival (Kino pavasaris, Lithuania), Aleš Ogorevc (winner of CICAE best visual contest, Slovenia)

SYNOPSIS of ”KEEP SMILING”

(Gaigimet)

A heartfelt tragicomedy about 10 women and their fierce rivalry to win a beauty contest for mothers who have borne several children. Competing in five categories, including Best Cook and Super Mother, the prize they’re desperate to win is an apartment and $25,000. The contestants, charming and ambitious, start out with high hopes and great expectations. Their dreams, however, are soon shattered when they realise that the whole thing is a charade. The participants become pawns for the media and contest organizers who shamelessly exploit their underprivileged circumstances for entertainment value. In this ludicrous microcosmos the women not only have to deal with each other, their families and the society they live in, but they also must confront themselves in order to preserve their self-respect and dignity.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:

I always find it interesting to observe how people behave in extreme situations – when they have to do things they would never have imagined doing normally. Some years ago, when I was shooting a documentary about homeless children, I visited a shelter called Bediani. It was a shelter for families who, due to difficult social conditions, found themselves out on the street. In Bediani, I met Tamar, a very intelligent, beautiful mother of seven, who told me about her struggle for survival in Tbilisi and how she even took part in a beauty contest for mothers to win a cash prize. This beauty contest was a deeply humiliating and disappointing experience for her. It was a tragic painful story, yet at times so absurd that I could hardly refrain from laughing. That’s how I decided to make this film. I also want to mention that all the stories and characters in the film are invented, with no resemblance to Tamar.

The members of the 2013 CICAE independent jury awarded the film Rock the Casbah by Yariv Horowitz as best film in the Panorama section of the Berlinale on Saturday, February 16th, 2013.

Members of the jury were : Francesca Bolognesi (Villa Medici, Rome), Iris Praefke (cinema Moviemento, Berlin) and Marianne Piquet (Cinéma Le Rex, Châtenay-Malabry, France).

Statement of the jury:

“The jury honors unanimously the force of the mise-en-scène and the subject. The director shows great intelligence in talking about a very personal situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on one side and on the other side he tells the universal story of the nonsense of war.”

Synopsis

The Gaza Strip in the early summer of 1989. A company of young Israeli soldiers reports for duty in the occupied area. Continuous clashes with the Palestinian population soon claim their first fatality: one of the soldiers, Iliya, is killed when a washing machine is dropped on him from the rooftop of an apartment block. The perpetrator escapes. In order to find him, their commanding officer orders some of the soldiers to take up position on the roof for the weekend. In spite of vehement protests from the building’s Palestinian owner, who fears being considered a collaborator, Aki, Ariel, Haim and Tomer begin their vigil. A lounger is set up and they listen to rock music on their transistor radio. But when the dead soldier Iliya’s father, now a broken man, pays them a visit they realise each and every one of them will lose their innocence in that place.
All the action of Yariv Horowitz’s film takes place in just a few days. His drama explores the psychological effects of the Arab-Israeli conflict on those involved. In particular the experiences of Tomer, who has only just reached adulthood, reflect the senselessness of armed action, which only ever creates yet more injustice.

The members of the 2013 CICAE independent jury awarded the film Grzeli nateli dgeebi (In Bloom) by Simon Groß and Nana Ekvtimishvil as best film in the Forum section of the Berlinale on Saturday, February 16th, 2013.

Members of the jury were : Dirk van der Straaten (De Balie Cinema, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), Mario Fortin (Cinéma Beaubien, Montréal, Canada) and Gabor Boszormenyi (Mozinet, Budapest, Hungary)

Statement of the jury:

„This year’s CICAE Forum jury choose a film that’s very strong on both a cinematic and political level. It tells a universal and personal story that plays to a background full of violence. The production design is marvellous and the two young main actresses pulled us in their story and did not let us go, untill this very moment.“

Synopsis

Tbilisi, Georgia, 1992: The Soviet era is over and Georgia must fend for itself. Civil war is raging in the province of Abkhazia. For Natia and Eka, the barely fourteen-year-old protagonists of Grzeli nateli dgeebi, childhood is coming to an end. Eka is growing up without her father, rebelling against her concerned mother and her older sister. And Natia’s father, a choleric alcoholic, terrorises the entire family. The two friends cannot find peace outside of the family either – not in school, not on the street, and not in the bread lines. Chaos, insecurity, and fear of what the future might bring hold sway in everyday life. An admirer gives Natia a pistol with one single bullet. A little later, she’s abducted by another admirer.
This first feature film by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Groß takes up the buried traditions of Georgian cinema, weaving together loud and soft, melancholy and missing love, eruptions of violence and a sense of the idyllic, precocious cold-bloodedness and childlike naïveté into a wonderfully rhythmic, exciting cinematic composition. A new generation of filmmakers has emerged in Georgia and is starting out by remembering its own history.

The CICAE is glad to announce that 3 more films are now available in streaming in its Screening Group on Cinando.

LAURENCE ANYWAYS, Xavier DOLAN (Canada, France, 2012, 168 minutes) – Art Cinema Award, Hamburg Film Fest 2012

Synopsis : Synopsis : Set in the 90’s, Laurence tries to salvage his relationship with his fiancée Fred after revealing to her his aspirations of becoming a woman. Laurence Anyways is the story of a wild and unusual love.

The Jury’s Verdict : Graceful and powerful, effortlessly staged and with an astonishing intensity, young Canadian director and author Xavier Dolan succeeds in creating a colorful, musically and emotionally charged piece on the challenging topic of transsexuality. Dolan proves he is more than capable of expressing this melodramatic love story revealed through gorgeous details. Being a man, being a woman and being human at the same time are fundamental questions reflected by Dolan’s film. Therefore this movie has the potential of reaching a young audience with usually little affinity for arthouse productions.

THE HAPPIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD, Radu JUDE (Romania, Netherlands, 2008, 100 minutes) – Art Cinema Award, Berlinale Forum 2009

Synopsis : This sweet, simple fascinating story highlights the daily life of a Romanian family that leaves the countryside to visit Bucarest for the day. This subtle comedy smartly unveils the economic and social contradictions Romania experiences.

The Jury’s Verdict : The film depicts a world where driving a car does not get you really far, drink orange juice does not satisfy your thirst and the only freedom you are given is in a cigarette secretely smoked. The strengh of the film lies in its ability to entertain while presenting excellent artistic qualities.

CROSSING BOUNDARIES, Florian FLICKER (Austria, 2012, 90 minutes) – ART CINEMA AWARD Sarajevo 2012

Synopsis: A woman – two men: her husband wants her to flirt with the other man to distract him from finding out about the couples activities as people smugglers. The other man wants to flirt with the woman to get some evidence about the illegal things they do. They fall in love – the woman, being manipulated by both men, finally chooses the only possible way out…Love is a warm gun.

The Jury’s Verdict: : We chose the film that we think combined everything into a perfect orchestra: the screenplay, the cinematography, the acting and of course the directing. The film’s topic is universal and it deals with the human nature of always finding and pushing one’s limits. We believe that this film will find great audiences in the CICAE member cinemas and festivals all across Europe and all over the world.

The Screening Room on CINANDO aims at giving these awarded films another chance to get noticed by exhibitors, distributors, film festival programmers and other professionals who are directly involved in the quality film market, all of them being members of the International Confederation of Art House Cinemas. We encourage our members to offer these films an exploitation while the platform can also be strategically employed by international sellers who will find in this group a professional audience interested in the distribution of art house titles.

More films will soon be available to our members.

More information on Cinando.com or info@cicae.org. If you don’t have a Cinando account, please write to us at this address info@cicae.info
