The European Arthouse Cinema Day
The European Arthouse Cinema Day is the biggest joint event in the arthouse sector worldwide, with more than 700 cinemas taking part each year.
It is a democratic platform highlighting the important role of arthouse cinema in our societies, with a strong political message and values: the arthouse movement stands up for tolerance, democracy and open exchanges beyond borders and cultures.
It is also the first joint international activity of cinema exhibitors to promote European films and boost the cinema experience in collaboration with the distributors, producers and right holders. It aims to strengthen cinemas in regions that don’t have their own arthouse unions, develop support structures and increase the visibility of arthouse films in general.
The 8th European Arthouse Cinema Day took place on 12 November 2023, bringing more than 85 000 spectators with about 650 cinemas from 38 countries participating.
It also featured several flagship events such as live-streamed conversations with directors and actors in Sweden, Spain and France, A screening of UN AMOR at the Golem Madrid Cinema followed by a Q&A with the director and 2023 ambassador Isabel Coixet as well as a national premier of THE TEACHER’S LOUNGE in Sweden.
The initiative is organised by the CICAE and its national associations members in partnership with Europa Cinemas, and co-funded by Creative Europe MEDIA Programme.
