Loveable wins the Arthouse Cinema Award at the 20th CineFest Miskolc • CICAE

At the 20th CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival, the film LOVEABLE (Elskling) by Lilja Ingolfsdottir received the Arthouse Cinema Award by the CICAE jury. The film was also awarded with the Emeric Pressburger Prize – The Festival’s Main Prize for the Best Film.

The jury, formed by Federico Babini (ArtHouse Cinema Spazio Alfieri, Florence, Italy), Erdmann Lange (Atlantis and Odeon Cinema, Mannheim, Germany) and Irene Silvera Frischknecht (consultant, London, UK) stated as following:

"The CICAE jury unanimously decides to give the ArtHouse Cinema Award of Cinefest Miskolc 2024 to the Norwegian drama “Loveable”.
In her debut feature film, screenwriter and director Lilja Ingolfsdottir tells a poignant story about the difficulties of accepting love from others and loving oneself. In this endeavour, she can rely on the strong female lead Helga Gutenberg and generally on an outstanding cast.
The director shows excellent ability in creating rich and authentic characters that feel close to life. Their struggles are familiar and relatable for any audience, making the film both contemporary and universal.Although the story is told from a female perspective it can have an emotional and intellectual effect on cinemagoers of all genders and generations."

Born in 1976, writer-director Lilja Ingolfsdottir presents her first feature-length film, a family story and a chronicle of a divorce. While Sigmund is constantly away on business, Maria juggles childcare and running the household alongside her career. Suddenly, he announces he wants a divorce. The film is a multilayered character study of a woman. But perhaps it goes even further, showing society's inability to acknowledge or accept psychological problems. This film, which strikes a serious emotional chord, was a sensation at Karlovy Vary this year: winning five awards, it could be considered a cinematic phenomenon.
